Improve How You Hold The Golf Club

You do not have to look past the PGA, LPGA or Champions Tours to see there is not one conventional way to take your golf grip on a golf club. The tours have all types of grips from an overlap golf grips to interlocking golf grips to ten finger golf grips and even cross-handed grips. Ben Hogan outlined his thoughts about the grip in his classic book, The Modern Fundamentals. Your proper golf grip should feel comfortable to you. However, there are fundamentals for your proper golf grip. By simply clapping your hands together you can easily test your golf grip fundamentals. Here is how you do it.

When you are ready, allow your arms to hang naturally. Now take your regular golf stance without a golf club. Since your do not have a club to grip, stand with your palms flat together. Notice how the palms of your hands are parallel. Now that you are in you proper set up with your palms being parallel to each another, this results in a good golf grip fundamental. If your hands are not parallel to each other, your hands with fight against each other trying to get back to impact. With your palms of your hands being parallel to each other, your hands will now work together as one unit.

Now, take your golf grip on your golf club. Straighten out your fingers while still holding the club in your hand and open your palms just wide enough to reveal if your palms are parallel. If your palms are parallel, then you have this grip fundamental conquered. If your palms are not parallel to each other, you need to work your hands around on your club until your palms are parallel. Now retake your golf grip. You need to realize that this new feeling should be your new grip.

The palm of your right hand as well as backside of your left hand will be facing your target if you choose to assume a neutral grip. A higher handicap player typically needs to use a stronger grip to release the golf club. For a stronger grip, the back of your left hand would be tilted towards the sky with the palms still parallel.

Do you Know the Steps of a Golf Swing?

There are 6 basic steps in the golf swing that each golfer should be aware prior to each golf shot. Step number 1 is body alignment relative to the target. Start by standing 2 to 3 yards behind the golf ball, with your body and the ball forming a straight line to the target. Pick out a guiding target directly behind and directly in front of the golf ball that is in the line your body and the golf make toward the target. These targets could be anything on the ground inches in front and behind the golf ball like leaves, grass, a broken tee, whatever. Focus on these ground targets that fall on the line you picked out to the target as you approach the golf ball.

Align the club face behind the ball, with the center of the club face on a direct line between the two ground targets you have selected. Grip the club with just enough tension to keep it from slipping in your hands throughout the course of the golf swing. Align your feet on a parallel plane with your ground targets, shoulder width apart, and the knees slightly bent. The front foot should be pointed slightly outward, toward the target, to allow your hips to flow freely through the swing.

Your upper body should tilt a bit toward the ball while keeping good posture. Your arms should hang loosely in front of your body to loosely grip the golf club. Your shoulders should line up parallel with the golf ball to target line and your toes. Your head should tilt down with your eyes on the back of the golf ball where you want the club head to impact it. This part of the golf swing is known as the setup or addressing the ball.

This element of the golf swing is the back swing or take away. Your back elbow should remain closely tucked to your ribs as you slowly take the golf club back. The golf club should remain on a straight line along the plane of your alignment toward the target on the ground. The front arm should remain straight throughout this part of the swing and always keep your eye on the back of the golf ball where you want the club face to impact the ball. This back swing motion should instinctively place your chin into your front shoulder. Your hips should stay still and tilted a bit, while your front knee will turn in. At the top of your back swing, your wrists should cock a little. This allows for a more powerful down swing and more distance on your golf shot.

Bring the club downward toward the ball, uncoiling the wrists, and shifting your weight onto your front foot. You should attempt to generate force and speed on your down swing, while never taking the club face off of the target line. Upon making contact with the ball, the club face should strike the ground as it moves through, taking a divot from the ground in the area past where the ball was lying, and through your second ground target.

The finish will generate a bit more distance if done properly. Follow through the golf swing with a high follow through of the golf club. Your rotation of the hips should have turned them directly toward your target. Since your weight will shift, it should now be squarely on your front leg. You should now be seeing your golf ball soaring toward your target in a nice arcing trajectory.

There’s probably no better place in the world to conduct business than on the golf course. Play golf like you mean it and gain that prospect’s respect.

There is much business that is done on the golf course every day of every week. You won’t find a better place to make a business deal than on the links. However, you will want to use some form of decorum to insure that your business goals will come to reality. Taking business on the golf course could be the best business decision you ever make!

Her second shot was generally a 7-iron as well, so she was getting a lot of practice with that club.

While the initial shot wasn’t going anywhere near as far as a 3- iron, they were straight and on many holes the combination of two 7-iron shots gave the same result for her as a 3-iron and a 9-iron. After gaining consistency with the 7 she move to the 3-iron off the tee and eventually the driver.

How Important Is Golf Swing Instruction

Golf swing instruction can make or break your golf swing. From the wrong source, it can ruin your golf swing. From the right source, it can transform it.

On the net, everyone thinks they are a golf pro. Just visit a golf forum, and you’ll see everyone and their brother giving out tips. You need to be careful…these golfers are probably 25 handicaps themselves.

When you’re considering golf instruction whether it be one on one with a teaching pro, or maybe a golf instruction dvd, you’ve got to do a little research on the credibility of this instructor.

It’s not too difficult to get a few references from people you know, or people who have worked with this person. If they are selling a dvd on the net, check their site out thoroughly. Are they certified? If so, what governing body is it? The PGA. USGTF. Or maybe the PGTAA certification.

If they are certified, what is their experience? Have they been a professional in the field for long? Hopefully atleast 5 years teaching golfers.

Then find out their teaching philosophy. Is it somewhat conventional? Does it make sense to you? Or, does he/she have some “new” method you’ve never heard of before?

Secondly, are they going to redo your swing, or help you get back on the course quickly? I would run if they say “this is going to take a while, and don’t expect results for many sessions”.

I have heard horror stories of golfers spending hundreds, if not thousands of dollars on lessons, and never seeing any improvement in their golf swing or game. They have “been taken” for their money, and those so-called teaching pros should be held accountable for the money they took from these golfers.

More times than not, you only need a few adjustments to your current golf swing to really see a difference on the course. Maybe it’s your grip. Alignment. Posture. Or your initial take-away. Either way, you should se a noticable difference in just a few lessons.

A swing fault can be a simple fix, but you will need to do a little practice or drills outside of your golf lessons to really see it stick. Like anything, you’ve got to put some work in to see something out of it.

Instruction specific to your golf swing can make a huge difference, so take all of the above into consideration before spending any of your hard-earned money.

How to Fix a Slice With a Draw

The hardest shot to hit in golf is the straight ball.  That’s why on tour everyone plays the ball either right to left or left to right for most of their shots.  So golfers trying to fix a slice should have a shot they want to play instead of that slice. Most golfers want to fix their slice with a draw.


The best way to approach this is to forget that you need to fix a slice.  Instead, focus on playing a draw.  There are just a few factors that create a draw.  From a physics standpoint a draw occurs when the clubface is slightly closed relative to the path of the clubhead.



Let’s start with your grip.  The left hand should be on top of the shaft with at least two knuckles, (preferably three) showing.  Then fit your right hand to the left with the thumb of your left hand resting comfortably in the palm of your right hand. 


When you are trying to fix a slice and learning to play a draw this will not feel natural.  So, practice taking this grip over and over away from the driving range and golf course.  You can do this with a club while you are watching TV.  Do it at least thirty times a day every day for a month.  Make it feel natural.  If your grip reverts to its old form on the course you won’t be able to start playing the draw you desire.



Make certain that you set up with your feet, hips and most importantly shoulders closed to the target line.  Your left shoulder should feel like it is in front of the right shoulder.  If your right shoulder is in front you will not fix your slice and you definitely won’t start playing a draw.  Again, practice this at home, in front of a mirror.  Do it over and over until it feels natural so that you won’t revert to your slice address position. 



Finally, you need to swing the clubhead to the ball from just inside the target line.

There are two major swing flaws that tend to happen with slicers.  First, you have been told that the swing should be from the inside to out.   So from the top of your backswing you throw your hands out at the ball.  The problem is when your hands travel out to the ball so does the clubhead and you end up swinging across the ball and produce yet another slice.  The clubhead is what must swing from inside to out, not your hands.  To do this your hands actually have to stay close to your body, closer than you think.  From this position with your hands the club can be swung out to the ball.  Watch the tour pros on TV when they show slow motion swings.  You will be amazed at how close their hands are to their bodies.  Jim Furyk is a great one to watch for this. 


The second major swing flaw a slice has is that they move their bodies too far forward in the downswing.  This is usually just the result of swinging too hard.  When your body center moves forward it becomes impossible to swing your arms quickly enough to catch up and square the clubface.  As a result, you slice the ball.   


To fix the slice swing problems, start practicing this with a short iron off of a tee.  Actually, tee the ball up higher than you think you should.  This will give you the confidence to work the club from inside the ball and draw it back.  Swing easy, you will be amazed how far you hit it.  Try and quiet down your lower body and swing your arms more.  You can do this by hitting balls while standing with your feet together touching each other.  Once you get the feel of your arms swinging past your swing center and the clubhead releasing through impact you will be drawing the ball in no time.

There is information available widely through the web, PGA courses and magazine articles that brings you up to date with the latest thinking in golf. They teach you the latest on how to swing each club correctly, how to putt, how to analyse your swing, how to get mentally ‘tough’, how to improve flexibility and how to fitter and stronger for golf.

Today there is a plethora of information being offered about golf. Some of it correct, all of it interesting, but how much of it is relevant to you? And how do you know which of these generic exercise tips is going to help you? Even if you trained using each one for 6 weeks and then took the results onto the course and tried them how do you then know whether your performance is ‘that exercise’ or that you just had a good day?

Even video/digital analysis, although interesting from all points of view measure the movement discrepancies in a golfer’s swing, it doesn’t tell us why you are performing these movement aberrations. Knowing what you’re doing wrong, but not knowing why you’re doing it is sometimes worse than not knowing what you’re doing wrong!

Golfers and Coaches need a simple system of analysis that they can use in conjunction with their coaching techniques to find out why golfers perform their particular swing. Although there are fundamental similarities to all good swings, each swing is like a finger-print and unique to that individual. Why is it unique? It’s because we are all biomechanically different and unless you understand what those differences are, how can you identify whether your swing is due to poor technique or something that has to done to compensate for a mechanical problem? You can’t. The variety of golf swings that exists represents the many ways that the human body can compensate for its biomechanical problems.

For example, let’s take a typical handicapper’s slice. You know the typical causes of a slice and the things you would normally work on, bearing in mind the individual and what you see. At the same time we also know that these ways don’t always work. There may be a number of reasons for this, the you may not be practicing, it may take some time to work out which is the best method for you or quite simply it may be that the person doesn’t have it in him to do what you want. Alternatively, it is likely that he can’t do it. If that pupil has a longer right leg (assuming he’s a right handed golfer), then he will have a tendency towards a more upright back swing. We know this because of the way spine and pelvis work biomechanically. A longer right leg compresses the joints in the spine on that side and so they can’t rotate easily. They therefore have to side bend to gap the joints and initiate movement, which causes an upright backswing. We also know that this then leads to a more out-to-in downswing and therefore a slice (depending upon grip and ball position of course). So you could work all day on preventing this upright backswing, which you know is leading to a slice, but it will not change until you’ve addressed the leg length discrepancy.

Invariably these leg length discrepancies are cause by a rotated pelvis and often they don’t cause symptoms, you won’t even know it exists. If this is the case then doing some simple exercises can help re-align the pelvis, reduce the leg length discrepancy and allow you to flatten that back swing.

There are many more of these examples. As well as leg length discrepancies, other biomechanical issues can include, poor motor programming strategy (the way the muscles link together in movement patterns), poor control between the pelvis and shoulders, nerve adhesions or stiffness, faulty core muscle control, immobility around the hips, pelvis and spine as well as simple lack of flexibility. Some of these issues sound quite technical and complex, but they’re actually very simple to test and eradicate.

Biomechanics works ‘hand in glove’ with your teaching, it is crucial Pro’s understand and embrace this as its going to be the next big thing in golf.

There is a system that exits that can help you and pros to learn about and address these issues. It comes 3 forms. Firstly there is a software package that takes you through some simple biomechanical tests and the expert system takes you through as series of exercises to eradicate their biomechanical problems. Secondly there are courses, which are endorsed by the PGA, which teach PGA professionals how to assess their own pupils and administer the exercises themselves. Or, thirdly experts can come to your club and assess your pupils individually and make bespoke recommendations based upon a detailed assessment of their biomechanics and following a discussion with their PGA professional, a decision can be made as to the best programme for them to follow.
